Before the final round of MotoGP 2024, Francesco “Pecco” Bagnaia had already realized how difficult it would be for him to reclaim the world championship title.
Bagnaia, the reigning champion for the past two seasons, had to relinquish the MotoGP 2024 world championship title to Jorge Martin, who officially secured it after finishing third in the MotoGP Barcelona 2024 race on Sunday (11/17/2024).
With his third-place finish, Martin successfully secured the top spot in the MotoGP standings at the end of the season, finishing 10 points ahead of Bagnaia, who won the race in Montmelo.
Interestingly, Pecco Bagnaia actually had more wins than Jorge Martin in the 2024 MotoGP season. However, Bagnaia failed to score points in eight races (including sprint races), compared to only four non-scoring races for Martin.
After a crash during the sprint race in the MotoGP Malaysia 2024, the 19th of the season’s 20 races, Pecco Bagnaia admitted that he already realized the championship was leaning towards Martin.
“One day, I will accept (losing the world championship title),” Bagnaia said after the race in Montmelo, as quoted by Crash.net.
“However, after the crash in Malaysia, I already understood that the situation had become much more complicated. Scoring 29 points was extremely difficult,” he said about the circumstances at the time.
“In the end, I just tried my best, aimed to win all the remaining races, and I think this was the best result I could achieve,” he concluded.
