Jorge Martin secured the world championship title at MotoGP Barcelona 2024, following in the footsteps of MotoGP legend Valentino Rossi 23 years ago.

Martin clinched the championship after finishing third at the Catalunya Circuit on Sunday evening (11/17/2024). The Pramac Racing rider completed the race behind his rivals, Francesco Bagnaia and Marc Marquez.

The result was more than enough to maintain his position at the top of the world championship standings. Martin accumulated a total of 508 points this season, 10 points ahead of Bagnaia in second place.

This achievement also led Jorge Martin to a remarkable record. He became the first rider to win the world championship with an independent team, often referred to as a satellite team, in the MotoGP era, which began in 2002.

However, Martin is not the first to achieve such a feat in Grand Prix history. Valentino Rossi was the last to do so when he won the 500cc GP in 2001, the premier class at the time.

Before him, Marco Lucchinelli and Franco Uncini claimed world championship titles with non-factory teams in 1981 and 1982, respectively. But one of the most memorable achievements was by Kenny Roberts, who defeated Barry Sheene and Suzuki with Yamaha’s independent team.
