The new trailer for the Minecraft Movie is here, and it aligns—block-perfectly—with what we’ve seen of the film so far, which, unsurprisingly, resembles the best-selling video game it’s based on.
It also dives into Jack Black’s character, Steve, channeling his childhood longing to be a miner (as kids do) to discover “a magical land where anything you can imagine is possible, as long as what you imagine can be built from blocks.” Hey, we know a place like that! Watch the trailer here:
There’s some potential fun to be had here—Jason Momoa as “Garrett ‘The Garbage Man’ Garrison, gamer of the year 1989,” with hair to match—alongside some elements that feel overly familiar, including an overused MGMT song setting the backdrop for a Minecraft-y adventure. However, there seems to be a plot involving teamwork against “dark forces,” with magical and practical devices aiding our heroes—who are ready to snark, sprint, and scream in equal measure.
Directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre), the Minecraft Movie also stars Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge.
Here’s the official description:
“Welcome to the world of Minecraft, where creativity isn’t just a tool for crafting but also essential for survival! Four misfits—Garrett ‘The Garbage Man’ Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Hansen), Natalie (Myers), and Dawn (Brooks)—find themselves grappling with everyday issues when they’re suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a strange, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination.
To return home, they must master this world (and protect it from nefarious forces like Piglins and Zombies) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected expert crafter, Steve (Black). Together, their adventure will challenge the five of them to be brave and reconnect with the qualities that make each of them creative… skills they’ll need to thrive back in the real world.”
The Minecraft Movie hits theaters and IMAX in North America on April 4, 2025, and internationally starting April 2, 2025. Will you, ahem, make time for this one?
