Hasto Says Jokowi is Losing Influence in Central Java

PDIP Secretary-General Hasto Kristiyanto stated that Indonesia’s 7th President, Joko Widodo (Jokowi), has lost the cultural roots that should be upheld and practiced as a Javanese.

Hasto claimed to have received this perspective from Central Java residents who shared their opinions about Jokowi.
“Especially in Java, the people I met in Central Java expressed that Pak Jokowi wis ora njawani (is no longer behaving like a Javanese),” Hasto said at the PDIP Headquarters in Jakarta on Wednesday (11/20).

Hasto argued that Jokowi no longer embodies the Javanese values of noble character that serve as a guide for social interactions. He suggested that Jokowi’s actions do not align with the Javanese philosophy of ojo dumeh (do not be arrogant).
“Awareness of values and culture, like ojo dumeh (do not be arrogant), ojo nguntal negoro (do not exploit the country), and ngono ya ngono ning ojo ngono (so it may be, but not to that extent) is essential. These philosophies are deeply rooted in Javanese culture,” he said.

On the other hand, Hasto expressed no concern over Jokowi’s political moves, particularly his support for candidates opposing PDIP in the 2024 Regional Elections in Central Java and Jakarta.
Hasto emphasized that PDIP has consistently faced and overcome electoral challenges, even against candidates supported by powerful coalitions or government figures.
“Our main strategy is to connect with the people directly, as this is the most crucial aspect. Additionally, we will ensure that our candidates are the best ones available,” he explained.

The tension between Jokowi and PDIP has escalated since the 2024 presidential election, where Jokowi supported President Prabowo Subianto. Most recently, PDIP declared that Jokowi is no longer considered a member of the party.

In the upcoming 2024 regional elections, Jokowi is once again at odds with PDIP. In Jakarta’s election, Jokowi supports Ridwan Kamil-Suswono, while PDIP backs Pramono Anung-Rano Karno. Similarly, in Central Java, Jokowi endorses Ahmad Luthfi-Taj Yasin, while PDIP nominates Andika Perkasa-Hendrar Prihadi.
