Jakarta – The South Korean Presidential Office announced that the chief of staff and senior secretaries of President Yoon Suk Yeol have submitted their resignations. The resignations were offered following the lifting of the martial law decree announced by President Yoon.
As reported by CNN on Wednesday (4/12/2024), the chief of staff and more than 10 senior secretaries of President Yoon have tendered their resignations, according to the presidential office.
Despite calls for him to resign following the declaration of martial law late on Tuesday (3/12), President Yoon Suk Yeol has not stepped down.
The senior officials working for President Yoon offered their resignations en masse, according to the Yonhap news agency, after Yoon decided to revoke the martial law decree.
“Senior aides to Yoon offered to resign en masse due to the martial law declaration,” Yonhap said, without providing further details. The presidential office did not immediately respond to AFP’s request for comment.
President Yoon Suk Yeol had already announced the lifting of the martial law status. This decision was made after the South Korean National Assembly rejected the decree.
President Yoon’s cabinet approved the parliament’s decision to end the implementation of martial law at 04:30 WIB, about six hours after Yoon had declared martial law.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff also withdrew the troops that had been deployed for the implementation of martial law. The troops have returned to their bases.
“At 11 p.m. last night, I announced martial law with my firm resolve to save the nation from anti-state forces attempting to paralyze the essential functions of the state and the constitutional order of our free democracy,” he said.
“However, following a request from the National Assembly to lift martial law, I have withdrawn the troops deployed for the enforcement of martial law,” he added.
