Apple Given One Week to Ensure $1 Billion Investment in Indonesia

Jakarta – The Minister of Investment and Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), Rosan Roeslani, has asked Apple to invest $1 billion, or approximately IDR 15.95 trillion (at an exchange rate of IDR 15,950), in Indonesia. He argued that the investment by the American technology giant is relatively small.

Rosan mentioned that this request was made directly to Apple, and he is seeking an official written response from the company, which will then be forwarded to the Ministry of Industry.

“We’ve already discussed this, and God willing, for the first phase, I will receive a written statement. I requested from them an investment of $1 billion for the first phase. I asked them to provide this in writing. Hopefully, within a week, I will receive their commitment, which I will then forward to the Ministry of Industry,” said Rosan during a meeting with Commission XII of the Indonesian House of Representatives on Tuesday (December 3, 2024).

He explained that this investment commitment of IDR 15 trillion was based on the principle of fairness, considering that Indonesia has become a major market for Apple’s products.

“Because, again, we want to see them (Apple) act fairly. You (Apple) gain benefits here, so invest here, and create jobs here as well. Frankly, their investment here is still very small, very small. I have communicated with them several times, and I have told them that, since I am also in communication with the Ministry of Industry, the investment should be much larger,” he added.

Furthermore, this increase in investment is expected to help drive Indonesia’s economy and create new jobs. Additionally, if Apple includes Indonesian industries in its global supply chain, it could have a significant impact.

“Most importantly, we want to see the global value chain and supply chain move to Indonesia. Because usually, when one player moves, it will trigger or have a trickle-down effect on its suppliers to invest in Indonesia as well. Hopefully, within a week, I will get their commitment, as we are proactively communicating with them,” Rosan concluded.
