Black-Plated Vehicles May Be Banned from Using Subsidized Fuel, Here’s Why

Economy, News24 Views

Jakarta – Black-plated vehicles may soon be prohibited from using subsidized fuel. This is the explanation provided by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Bahlil Lahadalia, regarding the matter.

The government will implement a scheme to limit the use of subsidized fuel. However, until now, there have been no specific criteria established for the types of vehicles eligible for subsidized fuel. Nonetheless, Minister Bahlil Lahadalia revealed that black-plated vehicles may no longer be allowed to use subsidized fuel.

“Because we want to ensure that this is provided to those who are entitled. It’s not fair for black-plated vehicles to receive subsidies, especially if they are not used for public transport but for mining, palm oil transport, or factory goods transport. It’s inappropriate to provide them with subsidized diesel or gasoline,” said Bahlil, as quoted by CNBC Indonesia.

Unlike black-plated vehicles, public transportation with yellow plates will still be allowed to use subsidized fuel.

“One of the vehicles eligible for subsidies are those with yellow plates, such as public minivans and public transport,” Bahlil added.

The restriction on subsidized fuel for vehicles has been discussed since 2022. However, the decision is still not final even with changes in government leadership. The government is still reviewing Presidential Regulation No. 191 of 2014 concerning the provision, distribution, and retail pricing of fuel.

Previously, there were discussions regarding certain vehicle criteria that would still be allowed to use subsidized Pertalite or diesel. According to information received by detikFinance in September 2024, the limitation will be based on the engine capacity of the vehicle.

Vehicles eligible for subsidized fuel will have a maximum engine capacity of 1,400 cc, while for diesel vehicles, only those with a maximum engine capacity of 2,000 cc will be allowed to use subsidized fuel.

On the other hand, users of Pertalite and subsidized diesel have also been asked to register their vehicles on the subsiditepat.mypertamina.id website. After registration, consumers will receive a QR Code that can be used for transactions at Pertamina gas stations.
