Jakarta – PT PLN (Persero) revealed that transactions at Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (SPKLU) have increased fivefold over the past year. One of the driving factors is the surge in electric cars from China. This development has left them somewhat uneasy!
PLN’s President Director, Darmawan Prasodjo, stated that SPKLU usage will continue to soar next year. As a result, PLN is currently working to expand these facilities to meet the growing demand from the public.
“We have observed that the number of transactions at our SPKLU, public electric vehicle charging stations, has increased fivefold each year,” said Darmawan Prasodjo during a meeting with the Commission XII of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) in Jakarta, quoted by Antara, Tuesday (December 3, 2024).
“Thus, by 2025, we are a bit on edge. If it increases fivefold, we are already preparing to install SPKLU stations in rest areas and surrounding areas,” he added.
According to Darmawan, the increase in SPKLU transactions is driven by the growing population of Chinese electric cars. He even highlighted one particular brand that has become quite massive in Indonesia.
“The sale of electricity at SPKLU has also increased fivefold, and we have seen one Chinese electric car brand whose sales have skyrocketed over the past few months, leading to a significant increase in the number of electric cars,” he explained. “For this reason, we are already preparing for Lebaran this year.”
Given this situation, Darmawan emphasized that PLN must inevitably build more SPKLU stations across Indonesia to prevent long queues of people waiting to charge their vehicles.
“Because if not, there will be an extraordinary queue, and for that, we have already made preparations,” he said.
Based on PLN data, the increase in SPKLU transactions has been evident since Lebaran 2023, which recorded 2,500 transactions. Meanwhile, during Lebaran 2024, the number of SPKLU transactions increased fivefold to 12,600.
With this in mind, PLN projects that by Lebaran 2025, SPKLU transactions will reach 64,600.
