South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol Urged to Resign from Party

Jakarta – The leader of the ruling party in South Korea (People Power Party) has called for President Yoon Suk Yeol to leave his party. This demand follows the military emergency that was declared by Yoon.

“Demanding the President resign from the party,” said People Power Party leader Han Dong Hoon, as reported by AFP on Thursday (5/12/2024).

Han Dong Hoon added that his party also “does not seek to defend the unconstitutional military emergency declared by the president.”

It is known that Yoon is from the People Power Party.

Blocking Impeachment Motion

However, the party promised to block an impeachment motion led by the opposition party. Han emphasized that his party does not defend the military emergency that was declared by President Yoon.

“As the leader of the party, I will work to ensure that this impeachment motion does not pass to prevent the adverse effects of the chaos that the society and its supporters are unprepared for,” Han said, as quoted by Yonhap News Agency.

Han stressed that this action does not mean he is defending the military emergency. According to him, the military emergency declared by Yoon was unconstitutional.

“Those responsible for disturbing society and causing harm through the unconstitutional military emergency, including the president, must be held strictly accountable,” he said.

It is known that the impeachment motion was proposed by 191 opposition lawmakers. To advance this effort, the opposition needs a two-thirds majority vote in the parliament for it to pass.

Out of 300 members of the National Assembly, the opposition needs eight votes from PPP members to pass the bill.
