Jakarta – Two foreign tourists were reported dead after being struck by a large fallen tree at the popular Bali tourist destination, Monkey Forest Ubud, on Tuesday (10/12/2024).
Ubud Police Chief Kompol Gusti Nyoman Subarsana stated that the two foreign nationals who died after being struck by a tree were from France and South Korea. Both were female tourists, namely Funny Justine Christine (32) who was a French citizen and Kim Hyoeun (42) who was a South Korean citizen.
Another female tourist from South Korea named Lee Sunni (45) suffered serious injuries due to the fallen tree incident.
The three victims reportedly did not have time to avoid the falling tree. The victims were then rushed to RS Kenak Medika Ubud using an ambulance, while other tourists who sustained minor injuries were treated at a clinic in Monkey Forest Ubud.
“We have secured the incident location and are conducting further investigations to determine the cause of the tree’s fall,” said Nyoman Sudarsana.
In the surveillance camera (CCTV), several tourists were seen scattering when the 2-meter-diameter tree fell at noon, at 12:25 WITA. The tree fell, allegedly due to strong winds and heavy rain.
After checking, it turned out that it wasn’t just one tree, but three trees that fell at once: a banyan tree, a pule tree, and a kresek tree. The trees grew near Pura Prajapati.
“The tourist area is temporarily closed for cleaning and recovery processes,” he added.
