Zurich – The 2030 World Cup marks a century of the tournament. So the World Cup must also be held in a special way on three continents and six different countries.
FIFA has just announced the winning bids for the 2030 and 2034 World Cups. For 2030, Morocco, Portugal and Spain are the hosts, followed by Saudi Arabia four years later.
That means for successive editions, the World Cup will be held in three different countries, after 2026 in the United States, Canada and Mexico. However, there is something different about the 2030 World Cup.
The World Cup marks the 100th anniversary of the grandest football tournament in the world. That’s why FIFA isn’t just holding it in three countries, but six countries from three different continents are staging the matches!
2030 World Cup: Morocco, Portugal, Spain + Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay
Morocco, Portugal, and Spain are the hosts of the 2023 World Cup. But there’s the addition of Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay also hosting matches.
Why were the three Latin American countries chosen? Because Uruguay was the first host of the 1930 World Cup and won by beating Argentina 4-2, while Paraguay is the location of the headquarters of the Latin American Football Federation (CONMEBOL).
Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay were each only allotted one opening match each so were not called hosts. Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay have all qualified directly for the 2030 World Cup finals.
The plan will be 48 teams and 104 matches enliven the 2030 World Cup.
“There is no better way to celebrate 100 years of the World Cup in 2030 than holding it in six countries on three continents, with 48 teams and 104 extraordinary matches. The world will come together to celebrate 100 years of the World Cup,” FIFA President Gianni Infantino said on Reuters.
“Congratulations to the prospective hosts who have tried hard. But I want to say a big thank you to the six confederation presidents and their national teams.”
