Leader of the Ruling Party in South Korea Resigns Following President Yoon’s Impeachment

Jakarta -The drama following the military emergency in South Korea continues. Today, Han Dong-hoon, the leader of the People Power Party (PPP), resigned from his position.

“I resign as the leader of the People’s Power Party,” said Han as reported by AFP, Monday (12/16/2024).

The People Power Party is currently the ruling party in South Korea. The announcement from Han Dong-hoon was delivered through a televised press conference.

Han also expressed an apology following the military emergency that was suddenly announced by former President Yoon Suk Yeol.

“I sincerely apologize to everyone who has suffered due to the military emergency incident,” said Han.

President Yoon Suk Yeol was impeached by the National Assembly on Saturday (14/12) following the brief imposition of martial law on December 3.

Due to this parliamentary decision, Yoon is now suspended from his position while the Constitutional Court of South Korea deliberates whether to uphold his impeachment.

The Constitutional Court of South Korea now has 180 days to decide Yoon’s future.

If he supports the impeachment, Yoon will become the second president in South Korea’s history to be successfully impeached.
