Moscow – A Russian military court sentenced one of its citizens to 20 years in prison for allegedly attempting to poison Russian soldiers preparing to fight against Ukrainian forces. The actions of the Russian citizen from Siberia were intended to support Ukraine.
The Russian security service FSB, in its statement as quoted by the RIA Novosti news agency and reported by AFP on Wednesday (12/18/2024), stated that the unnamed man was found guilty of “attempted assault” and “high treason” by the court.
The FSB stated that the man, who was a resident of the city of Barnaul in Altai, Siberia, had been sentenced to 20 years in prison.
“This Russian citizen, born in 1981, had contacted the Ukrainian special services through social media,” the FSB stated in its announcement.
In communication with the Ukrainian special services, according to the FSB, the Russian man expressed “his desire to support the Ukrainian Armed Forces.”
“As a canteen employee, he attempted to poison soldiers who were part of the mobilized contingent in Altai,” the FSB statement said.
It was also mentioned that the Russian man recorded the process for the Ukrainian special services.
Analysis shows that the substance the man added to the food intended for the Russian soldiers could cause severe poisoning and be fatal. The FSB did not provide further details about the type of substance used in the attempt to poison the Russian soldiers.
This case is the latest in a series of cases involving Russian citizens who have been sentenced to heavy prison terms for allegedly supporting Ukraine, after Moscow sent its troops to invade the neighboring country since February 2022.
Since then, thousands of Russians have been sanctioned for opposing the invasion of Ukraine.
