Jakarta -Investigators have issued an arrest warrant for the impeached President of South Korea, Yoon Suk Yeol. The arrest warrant was issued following the controversial declaration of a military emergency.
“The Joint Investigation Headquarters submitted an arrest warrant for President Yoon Suk Yeol to the Seoul Western District Court,” said the investigation team in a statement, as reported by AFP on Monday (30/12/2024).
The request by the investigator marks the first attempt to forcibly detain a sitting president in the constitutional history of the country.
Yoon was removed from his presidential duties by parliament due to a declaration of martial law. The constitutional court’s decision is pending on whether to confirm the impeachment.
Yoon’s dramatic actions have plunged South Korea into its worst political crisis in decades.
The chaos deepened last week when his successor, Han Duck-soo, was also impeached by parliament for failing to sign a bill for an investigation into Yoon.
Yoon, who is a former prosecutor, has been summoned three times for interrogation, but has always skipped. Yoon faces criminal charges of rebellion, with a penalty ranging from life imprisonment to the death penalty.
A 10-page prosecutor’s report states that Yoon allowed the military to fire their weapons if necessary to enter the parliament during a military emergency.
