Jakarta – The circulation of illegal cosmetics and harmful products seems never-ending. Monitoring by the Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM RI) from October to November 2024 revealed at least 69 brands confiscated due to prohibited ingredients.
In just one month, over 200,000 pieces of these products were circulated, mostly sold online through social media, with an economic value totaling IDR 8.91 billion.
“Most illegal cosmetic products found are imported from China, but there are also some from Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, and India. Testing revealed that many of these illegal cosmetic products contain banned substances, such as mercury and rhodamine B (red K10 dye),” explained BPOM RI Head Taruna Ikrar recently.
Using cosmetics containing K10 over a long period can trigger liver dysfunction and cancer. Cosmetic products containing textile dyes typically have bright, striking colors. BPOM RI urges the public to be cautious in selecting products.

Illegal Cosmetic Ingredients and Operations
In addition to finished illegal cosmetics, BPOM operations in Bandung uncovered raw pharmaceutical ingredients and bulk products (cream bases) mixed with drugs for skincare production in illegal home facilities. These producers lack the authority to manufacture cosmetics or drugs.
Prohibited substances used include hydroquinone, tretinoin, antibiotics, antifungal agents, and steroids. Illegal products containing these substances were distributed to beauty clinics in Java, including Bandung, Cimahi, Semarang, Solo, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Mojokerto, and Jember. The 208 items confiscated are valued at an estimated IDR 4.59 billion.
“West Java recorded the highest findings, amounting to over IDR 4.59 billion, followed by East Java at over IDR 1.88 billion, Central Java at over IDR 1.43 billion, and Banten at over IDR 1.01 billion,” concluded Taruna.
