Jakarta – Indonesia’s 7th President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has responded to the Constitutional Court (MK) decision to abolish the minimum 20 percent presidential threshold. Jokowi emphasized that the ruling is final and binding. He also hopes the decision will open opportunities for alternative presidential candidates.
“The hope is that there will be many alternative presidential candidates,” Jokowi said during an interview at his residence in Sumber, Banjarsari, as reported by detikJateng, Friday (January 3, 2025).
Jokowi stated that the MK’s decision is final and binding, meaning it will soon be followed up by lawmakers.
“It is a final and binding decision made by the MK. Therefore, it will soon be followed up by lawmakers, namely the DPR, in drafting new legislation,” Jokowi concluded.
As is known, the Constitutional Court (MK) has abolished the presidential threshold requiring at least 20 percent of parliamentary seats or 25 percent of the national valid votes in the previous election as a condition for nominating presidential and vice-presidential candidates. The MK declared that all political parties participating in elections now have the opportunity to propose presidential and vice-presidential candidates.
The ruling was read by Chief Justice Suhartoyo regarding Case No. 62/PUU-XXI/2023 at the Constitutional Court building in Central Jakarta on Thursday (January 2, 2025). The MK granted the petition in full.
