Seoul – South Korea’s opposition party, which holds a majority in parliament, has called on the Presidential Security Service (PSS) tasked with protecting President Yoon Suk Yeol to cooperate in his arrest. They emphasized that obstructing the arrest could lead to legal consequences.
“Anyone who obstructs the execution of an arrest warrant will be charged with obstructing official duties and inciting rebellion,” said Democratic Party representative Park Chan-dae, as reported by the BBC on Friday (January 3, 2025).
Meanwhile, the leader of the People Power Party has urged investigators to exercise restraint, describing the arrest attempt as unreasonable.
“An unreasonable attempt to arrest a sitting president,” he said.
Previously, as reported by AFP, South Korean investigators entered President Yoon Suk Yeol’s residence and issued an arrest warrant related to a recent military emergency announcement. Investigators and prosecutors had to pass through extremely tight security barricades to enter Yoon’s home.
“The execution of the arrest warrant for President Yoon Suk Yeol has begun,” stated the Corruption Investigation Office (CIO).
CIO investigators, including senior prosecutor Lee Dae-hwan, were allowed past the tight security barricades to enter Yoon’s residence to carry out the arrest. However, they were blocked by the military.
“They were confronted by a military unit inside after entering,” said Yonhap News Agency in an AFP report.
As of now, it remains unclear whether the Presidential Security Team, which continues to protect Yoon as head of state, will comply with the investigators’ orders.
