Jakarta – China has recently been in the global spotlight due to a human metapneumovirus (HMPV) outbreak. Neighboring Malaysia has also reported an increase in HMPV infections in 2024.
According to The Strait Times, Malaysia recorded 327 HMPV cases in 2024, a 45% increase from 225 cases in 2023. Malaysia’s Ministry of Health stated that HMPV is caused by a virus in the pneumoviridae family and is not a new disease.
HMPV typically presents symptoms similar to the common cold. However, in severe cases, it can develop into bronchitis or pneumonia.
Malaysia’s Ministry of Health urged the public to remain vigilant, especially since respiratory infections are expected to persist in the community. They recommended frequent handwashing with soap, wearing masks, and covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
“The public is advised to proactively maintain their health and prevent transmission to others, especially in enclosed and crowded spaces,” the statement read.
“This includes those planning to travel to high-risk countries.”
The rise in respiratory infections at the beginning and end of the year is a phenomenon also observed in other countries, particularly those with winter seasons, like China.
Malaysia’s Ministry of Health will monitor the development of respiratory infections both domestically and internationally, enhance preparedness, and take appropriate measures.
Recently, northern provinces of China reported an increase in HMPV cases among individuals under the age of 14.
According to an official statement, there was a surge in acute respiratory disease infections in China during the week of December 16-22, 2024.
An official from China’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stated that the country is likely to face various respiratory infections during the winter and spring seasons.
