Jakarta – Shin Tae-yong’s tenure as the coach of the Indonesia national football team has officially ended. The South Korean tactician has been dismissed by PSSI.
The announcement of Shin Tae-yong’s dismissal was made by PSSI on Monday (January 6, 2025). His termination comes as part of PSSI’s evaluation process.
“We see the need for a leader who can better implement strategies agreed upon by the players, improve communication, and execute programs more effectively for the Indonesia National Team,” stated PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir in an official statement.
“Pak Sumardji met with Coach Shin Tae-yong this morning, and the coach has received the correspondence. There will be further processes regarding the end of our relationship,” he explained.
Shin Tae-yong has been coaching the Indonesia national team since 2020. The 54-year-old tactician managed to elevate the Garuda’s FIFA ranking from 174 to 127.
Achievements Under Shin Tae-yong
Shin Tae-yong delivered several milestones during his tenure:
- He led the Indonesia National Team to qualify for the Round of 16 of the AFC Asian Cup for the first time in history.
- He guided the U-23 team to the semifinals of the 2024 AFC U-23 Asian Cup.
- Garuda Muda nearly secured a spot in the Olympics but fell short against Guinea in the final play-off round.
- His most notable achievement was taking Indonesia to the third round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers in the Asian zone, automatically securing a spot in the 2027 AFC Asian Cup finals.
Indonesia showed strong performances in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers, sitting in third place in Group C with six points and still in contention for a spot in the world’s largest football tournament.
One of the most memorable matches was Indonesia’s 2-0 victory over Saudi Arabia at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, with Marselino Ferdinan scoring both goals. This win ended a streak of poor results against the Green Falcons.
Shin Tae-yong’s contract was originally set to run until 2027. He signed an extension in June 2024 after meeting two key targets: qualifying for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup and leading the U-23 team to the quarterfinals of the AFC U-23 Asian Cup.
