Jakarta’s Oldest Market Faces Declining Customers, Vendor Revenue Drops by 70%

Jakarta – Pasar Jatinegara, also known as Pasar Mester, is experiencing a sharp decline in customers, significantly affecting vendor revenues in Jakarta’s oldest market.

Tono, a shoe vendor at Pasar Mester Jatinegara, noted that the decline in customer numbers started even before the pandemic. However, the situation has worsened significantly in recent years.

“The decrease started before the pandemic, but it wasn’t as bad. During the pandemic, everything collapsed. After the pandemic, things slightly improved but only lasted a year. Since 2023, it’s been the worst,” Tono shared with detikcom on Monday (6/1/2024).

Even major shopping events, such as the pre-Ramadan rush or back-to-school season, no longer bring significant crowds.

“During those times in the past, the market would be bustling—people parking their cars or even just walking around would cause congestion. Now, you can pick any parking spot. Hardly anyone stops by, let alone buys something,” Tono added.

The downturn has led to a 70% decrease in revenue for his wholesale shoe business. Many of his regular customers, including retailers from outside Jakarta, have cut back on purchases due to their own struggles with sales.

“Previously, they would pawn their assets for extra capital because they were confident about sales. Now, they’re hesitant and only restock when their stock is almost gone,” he explained.

Clothing Vendor Faces Similar Challenges

Andi, a clothing vendor at the same market, echoed Tono’s concerns. He observed a decline in customers since 2017, despite the market still appearing busy.

“The market is still crowded, but sales have dropped. Regular customers who used to buy twice a week now come once a week, impacting revenue significantly,” said Andi.

The pandemic worsened the situation, and his sales have yet to recover, with revenue dropping by approximately 70-80%.

“The decline is about 70-80%, but I don’t have exact figures. It’s around that range,” Andi added.

Despite the bustling history of Pasar Jatinegara, the ongoing challenges highlight the shifting dynamics of consumer behavior and the economic strain on traditional markets.
