Jakarta – Shin Tae-yong has officially parted ways with the Indonesian national football team. One of his most notable legacies is leading the Garuda to climb 48 spots in the FIFA rankings.

On Monday (6/1), PSSI (Indonesian Football Association) and Shin Tae-yong ended their partnership. The South Korean coach is no longer in charge of the national team, despite his contract running until 2027.

Shin took over as the coach of Indonesia’s national team in 2020, when the team was ranked 173rd in the FIFA rankings. Over time, Shin gradually helped the team rise. By 2021, Indonesia had climbed to 151st, and by late November 2024, the team reached its peak position at 125th.

In total, Shin Tae-yong led the Garuda to ascend 48 spots in the FIFA rankings. However, by the end of his tenure, Indonesia slipped back to 127th due to poor results in the 2024 AFF Cup (an event that contributes points to the FIFA rankings despite not being part of the FIFA calendar).

According to Transfermarkt, Shin Tae-yong oversaw 57 matches with the Indonesian national team, achieving 26 wins, 14 draws, and 17 losses. His team scored 106 goals and conceded 75.

PSSI has a mission to bring the Garuda into FIFA’s top 100 rankings. Will the next coach be able to achieve this goal?
