Jakarta – A massive wildfire swept through Los Angeles, consuming thousands of homes. However, one house remarkably stood untouched in the middle of the ruins surrounding it. The luxurious USD 9 million Malibu home belongs to David Steiner, a retired waste management executive.
As the Los Angeles wildfires reduced everything in their path to rubble and ash, Steiner’s three-story home remained intact. The white building stood out amidst the devastation.
Steiner believes the survival of his four-bedroom house was no coincidence. The property was specifically designed to withstand earthquakes and features extremely sturdy construction, including cement and stone walls, a fireproof roof, and deep foundation piles.
“Honestly, I never expected a wildfire to reach Pacific Coast Highway and cause a blaze,” Steiner told The New York Post, as quoted by detikINET.
“The architecture (of Steiner’s house) is quite remarkable. The cement and fireproof roof are excellent,” he added.
He admitted he didn’t expect his house to survive. “It seemed like no (house) could survive, and I thought we had lost ours,” he said.
The survival of the house amid destruction went viral on social media. A post noted that the house remained strong because it was made of concrete, unlike many homes in the area that were made of wood.
“This is not a miracle; it’s called concrete,” wrote a post about the house, which has been viewed 7.7 million times by netizens.
“Honestly, I don’t really understand why people build beautiful new houses out of wood near forests that burn regularly. Concrete houses still often get destroyed in fires, but not as frequently. Especially if the glass is strong,” wrote the account @Saul_Sadka, which posted about the house.
The wildfire disaster in Los Angeles has resulted in eleven deaths and destroyed approximately 10,000 buildings. Authorities evacuated 180,000 people, and the economic losses are estimated at USD 150 billion.
