Earnings Cut by 30 Percent, Ride-Hailing Drivers Complain: “It’s Inhumane!”

Jakarta – The Indonesian Online Drivers Association (Garda Indonesia) is protesting against the 30 percent application fee deductions imposed by Gojek and Grab. They argue that this rate is inhumane and places an even heavier burden on “green troops.”

Igun Wicaksono, Chairman of Garda Indonesia, stated that the excessively high application fee deductions reflect corporate arrogance at an alarming level. He also claimed that the set percentage violates existing laws.

“We have repeatedly protested the excessive application fee deductions, which are extremely inhumane and violate the regulations stipulated in the Minister of Transportation’s Decree No. 1001 of 2022, which caps application fees at 20 percent,” said Igun to detikOto, quoted on Monday (13/1).

“The fact on the ground is that the application fee deductions imposed by these two major companies exceed 20 percent, even reaching more than 30 percent. However, there has been no enforcement action or sanctions from regulators or the Ministry of Transportation,” he added.

Igun also questioned the role of the Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) in regulating these application companies that “violate” the rules by imposing higher deductions. He emphasized that the Ministry should take action.

“Our question is, where is the Ministry of Transportation that should enforce the regulations issued by its own agency?” he asked.

“Has the Minister of Transportation become powerless to act firmly against these major application companies, which seem to have more authority than the Minister of Transportation as the regulator?” he added.

It’s worth noting that reducing application fees has been a demand voiced by ride-hailing drivers since last year. During a major protest in Jakarta in September 2024, the issue was already raised.

“Our colleagues’ rights are being deducted beyond the regulations, leading to reduced income. This poses a risk to the safety of our colleagues operating on the roads due to these high deductions,” Igun concluded.
