Jakarta – The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) reported that Indonesia’s renewable energy (RE) mix reached only 14.1% by 2024. This figure falls significantly short of the 23% target set for 2025.

Director General of New and Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (EBTKE) at the ESDM Ministry, Eniya Listiani Dewi, stated that from this achievement, installed RE capacity stands at 14.1 gigawatts (GW) from a potential of 3,687 GW or 0.38%.

“Our challenge is to realize what we have planned. Looking back 10 years ago, the target of 23% RE by 2025 seemed almost untouchable, so why hasn’t it been achieved? That’s the focus we need to address as we approach 2025,” said Eniya during the ‘Early Spirit of 2025’ event at Menara Global, Jakarta, Thursday (16/1/2025).

Eniya also questioned the calculation method used to set the 23% RE target for 2025 at that time. She stated that the regulations are currently under revision following a review by President Prabowo Subianto.

“This is still far from the 23% target. We’ve even asked where the 23% calculation came from. To achieve this RE goal, we have now moved towards formulating it into a Government Regulation Draft (RPP),” Eniya said.

“Currently, national energy policies are being reviewed by the president because they were initially based on economic growth of 6.5%, but now the target is 8%. This review will soon be finalized, and from there we will establish the National Electricity General Plan (RUKN) and the Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL),” she added.

Eniya is optimistic that the RE mix will continue to grow, considering Indonesia’s vast potential.

“The president is about to inaugurate the Jatigede and Asahan hydropower plants in collaboration with PLN. These are among the largest hydropower plants, and this will add to the RE mix. Furthermore, a geothermal plant is soon entering its COD phase,” she said.
