Jakarta – Indonesia’s decision to become a full member of the BRICS group—comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—raises questions about the reaction of the United States (US). Concerns have emerged that the US might adopt policies unfavorable to Indonesia.
Regarding this, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto believes that the US understands Indonesia’s decision to join BRICS. “Whether America is upset or not, that is relative. But as of today, they already understand,” he said during the BNI Investor Daily Roundtable at the Mulia Hotel in Jakarta on Tuesday (15/1/2025).
The US has even expressed its support for Indonesia’s efforts to join the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). This was highlighted during President Prabowo Subianto’s visit to the White House in Washington DC some time ago.
“During the President’s visit to Washington, it was made clear, and in the statement released by the White House, they stated their support for Indonesia’s process to become a member of the OECD,” he stated.
Additionally, Indonesia already has several international economic collaborations with the US. By becoming a full member of BRICS, Indonesia can expand its potential cooperation and trade with fellow BRICS members.
