Jakarta – British energy giant BP plans to lay off 7,700 employees. This number consists of 4,700 staff-level workers and 3,000 contractors. The layoffs are part of the company’s cost-efficiency measures.

The announcement of the layoff plan was communicated by BP through an email sent to employees. In the announcement, BP openly stated its intention to implement company efficiency measures.

“We anticipate around 4,700 roles will be affected, representing the majority of the reductions. We are also reducing the number of contractors by over 3,000,” the email read, as reported by Japan Today, citing AFP on Friday (17/1/2025).

“We have more to do throughout this year, next year, and beyond, but we are making strong progress as we position BP to grow as a simpler, more focused, and higher-value company,” the announcement continued.

For context, BP employs around 90,000 permanent staff globally. Following the announcement of the layoff plan, the company’s stock price rose by approximately 1.5% on London’s FTSE 100 index.

The layoff announcement comes after BP CEO Murray Auchincloss revealed that the company must save at least $2 billion by the end of 2026.

In recent years, BP has struggled to meet its emission reduction targets, leading to revised goals. The company now targets a 20-30% reduction by the end of this decade compared to 2019 levels, down from the previous target of 35-40%.
