Jakarta – The India Open 2025 reaches its semifinal stage today (January 18). Gregoria Mariska Tunjung and Jonatan Christie face incredibly tough challenges to advance to the final.
Gregoria and Jonatan remain Indonesia’s last representatives in the tournament. The India Open semifinals will begin at 12:00 PM local time or 1:30 PM WIB.
Gregoria, seeded fourth, will take on Korea’s badminton queen An Se-young in the seventh match. Gregoria will once again try to break An’s dominance and seek her first victory after suffering 10 losses in their previous encounters.
The two shuttlers met in the semifinals in all three of their encounters throughout 2024. Gregoria Mariska Tunjung forced a rubber game only once and had to retire due to injury during the second game against An Seyoung at the Denmark Open last October.
Similarly, Jonatan Christie faces a tough challenge as he takes on Viktor Axelsen in the final match. Jojo has only won twice and lost 10 times to Axelsen in their 12 previous matches.
Axelsen has won their last seven encounters, while Jonatan’s last victory against the former world number one was in the semifinals of the French Open 2019.
However, Axelsen has not appeared as dominant as before, especially since the second half of last season. He exited early in the China Open and Denmark Open 2024 and was eliminated in his opening match at the Malaysia Open 2025. Jonatan Christie will aim to capitalize on this opportunity to secure a spot in the final.
