Las Vegas – Lionel Messi faced jeers during Inter Miami’s match against Club America in a friendly. La Pulga delivered a sharp comeback to the fans of the Mexican club.
Inter Miami kicked off their preparations for the 2025 MLS season by facing Club America at Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas, Nevada, on Sunday (January 19, 2025). Messi and his team won 3-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in regular time.
During the game, Messi received an unwelcoming reception. Club America supporters jeered at him from the stands. The Argentine star responded in kind.
After scoring Inter Miami’s opening goal, Messi displayed his jersey number to the entire crowd. The 37-year-old then made a three-finger gesture towards the opposing fans.
According to Give Me Sport, Lionel Messi’s three-finger gesture symbolized Argentina’s three World Cup victories, directed at Club America’s supporters. Mexico, the home country of Club America, has never won a World Cup, with their best achievements being quarterfinal appearances in 1970 and 1986.
In contrast, Argentina has won three World Cups — in 1978, 1986, and 2022. The most recent title was secured by Messi himself in Qatar two years ago.
Last season, Messi led Inter Miami to the MLS regular season championship. However, the team fell short in the playoffs.
In 2025, Inter Miami is now coached by Javier Mascherano. The former Barcelona teammate of Lionel Messi has signed a contract until 2027, replacing Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino.
