Rakitic: My Era’s Barcelona Was Better than Guardiola’s Barca

Barcelona – Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona is widely regarded as one of the best teams in the club’s history. However, former Barca star Ivan Rakitic disagrees.
During Guardiola’s four years in charge, Barca won 14 trophies. They achieved a treble, followed by a sixtuple at the end of 2009.

Barcelona’s golden era returned with the arrival of Luis Enrique as coach and the signing of Rakitic. Enrique’s debut season was explosive, with Barca securing their second treble in the 2014/15 season. The feat of winning six trophies could not be repeated, as they ended with five titles after losing the Spanish Super Cup.

Rakitic spent six seasons at Barca, winning 13 trophies, including Barcelona’s last Champions League title to date. According to Rakitic, Barca missed a strong leader in the locker room, like Xavi Hernandez, to achieve even greater success.
“There were important teams in every phase, and I think we won the Champions League with clear superiority, but then I think we lacked someone to push us to achieve more,” he told Marca.
“I think, in this regard, it was crucial for Xavi to stay that season. Then he left, and perhaps we lost a strong leader in the locker room,” the 36-year-old midfielder continued.
“These kinds of details are important because, in my opinion, our team was the best in history,” declared Ivan Rakitic.
