Israel Attacks West Bank During Gaza Ceasefire, 10 Dead

West Bank – The Israeli military launched an operation in the Jenin area of the West Bank during the ongoing ceasefire in Gaza. At least 10 people were killed in the military operation carried out by Tel Aviv on Tuesday (Jan 21) local time.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the operation in the West Bank was aimed at “eradicating terrorism” in the region.

The Palestinian Health Ministry based in Ramallah, as reported by AFP on Wednesday (Jan 22, 2025), confirmed that the Israeli military operation resulted in the deaths of at least 10 people, just days after the ceasefire in Gaza took effect.

The Israeli military and the Shin Bet security agency, in a joint statement, announced that they, along with Israeli Border Police, had launched an operation called “Iron Wall” in the Jenin area.

In a statement released shortly after the West Bank operation commenced, Netanyahu said the raid aimed to “eradicate terrorism” in Jenin and was part of a broader strategy to counter Iran “wherever it sends its weapons — in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen,” and the West Bank.

The Israeli government has accused Iran, which supports various armed groups across the Middle East, including Hamas in Gaza, of attempting to supply weapons and funds to militants in the West Bank.

The Palestinian Red Crescent, in a separate statement, reported that first responders treated seven people wounded by live bullets and accused Israeli forces of obstructing their access to the area.

The Governor of Jenin, Kamal Abu al-Rub, told AFP that the Israeli operation amounted to “an invasion of the (refugee) camp.” He noted that Jenin is also home to a Palestinian refugee camp.

“They came quickly, Apache helicopters in the air, and Israeli military vehicles everywhere,” he said.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the Palestinian security forces, Anwar Rajab, stated in a separate declaration that Israeli forces “opened fire on civilians and security forces, injuring several civilians and security personnel, one of whom is in critical condition.”

Jenin and its refugee camp are known as a hub for Palestinian militancy, and Israeli forces frequently conduct raids targeting armed factions there. In recent months, Tel Aviv’s raids in Jenin have intensified.
