Trump Deploys 1,500 Additional Troops to the Mexican Border

Washington – U.S. President Donald Trump has decided to deploy additional military personnel to the Mexican border. A total of 1,500 additional troops are being sent to the border area.

As reported by AFP on Thursday (23/1/2025), border security remains a top priority for Trump. On his first day in office as President of the United States, Trump declared a national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border.

With this additional deployment, the number of active-duty troops stationed there rises to 4,000. The additional troops consist of 1,000 army personnel and 500 marines.

“President Trump has signed an executive order to send 1,500 additional troops to the southern border of the United States,” said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt to reporters, according to AFP in Washington, D.C.

A senior U.S. military official at the Pentagon, who wished to remain anonymous, revealed that marines were initially deployed to assist with wildfires that devastated California. However, Trump redirected them to the border.

“These forces will be working on the deployment of physical barriers and other border missions. Their first operation will begin within 24 to 48 hours; they are on the move now,” said the senior military official.

“We also anticipate additional intelligence, surveillance, and aerial support assets being deployed to the border to enhance situational awareness,” the official added.

Another senior U.S. defense official stated that the additional deployment was part of an initial effort by the U.S. that had to be undertaken immediately. “We anticipate more missions following this,” the official continued.

Acting U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Salesses spoke about the deportation of migrants. U.S. military forces will also assist with deportation flights for migrants overseas.

“The department will provide military air transport to support DHS (Department of Homeland Security) deportation flights for over five thousand illegal aliens from the San Diego, California, and El Paso, Texas, sectors,” Salesses said in a statement.

“DHS will provide law enforcement on these flights, and the State Department will secure the necessary diplomatic clearances and notify host countries,” he added.

The deportation effort will involve approximately 100 U.S. military personnel.
