London -A petition calling for the revocation of the Prince of Wales title from Prince William has garnered more than 42,000 signatures since it was first launched. This petition was created by a Welsh citizen who views the title as a symbol of historical oppression against their country.
Quoted from detikPop, Thursday (30/1/2025), the petition described the title given to Prince William as an insult to the people of Wales.
“This title remains a symbol of historical oppression and implies that Wales is still under the power of the monarchy, which diminishes Wales’s status as a nation and country,” the statement in the petition reads.
The petition also highlights that since the era of Llywelyn the Last and Owain Glyndwr, the title of Prince of Wales has only been given to English nobility as a symbol of dominance over Wales.
“Until today, the Prince of Wales has not had a sincere relationship with our country,” emphasized the petition creator.
This petition was initiated by Dr. Trystan Gruffyadd, a resident of Pontypridd, Wales, shortly after King Charles III bestowed the title upon Prince William in 2022. Since then, this initiative has continued to attract public attention.
Through the Change.org platform, many citizens expressed their protests against the title.
“The title of Prince of Wales has been a great insult to the entire Welsh people since it was first created,” wrote one comment in the online petition.
The title of Prince of Wales was given to Prince William after Queen Elizabeth II passed away in 2022. In the future, this title is projected to be passed on to William’s eldest son, Prince George, when he becomes king.
This controversy reflects the ongoing tension between Welsh national identity and English royal tradition.
