Brief History of “Sumbu Filosofi”, Newest UNESCO World Heritage

Jakarta, Timerilis.com – UNESCO officially confirmed Yogyakarta’s Sumbu Filosofi as a world cultural heritage during the 45th Session of the World Heritage Committee (WFC) on Monday, September 18, 2023.

This decision marks the end of a long journey towards this international recognition.

Gusti Kanjeng Ratu Bendara, Chairperson of the Museum Tourism Destination of the Indonesian Recreation Park Business Association (PUTRI) said the process of proposing Sumbu Filosofi as a world heritage began 13 years ago.

“Our struggle is quite long. It has been twelve or thirteen years since we started submitting the proposal to UNESCO,” said Bendara, on Friday (22/09/2023).

However, the idea of making the Sumbu Filosofi a UNESCO World Heritage emerged 30 years ago. During the early leadership of Sri Sultan Hamengkubawana X.

“It was more than 30 years ago that the concept of the Sumbu Filosofi was proposed by Sri Sultan Hamengkubawana X. Sumbu Filosofi has a strong narrative, but from a domestic perspective,” he said.

With this recognition by UNESCO, the architectural aspects of the Sumbu Filosofi cannot be changed and must be preserved forever.

The social and cultural aspects must also be based on the Sumbu Filosofi because UNESCO will continue to monitor it.

“This Sumbu Filosofi must be recognized by UNESCO so that the level is high. The struggle was originally called the Philosophical Line, but finally, it was approved as the Cosmological Axis,” Bendara explained.

This decision will also benefit tourists, as the shape and story of the Sumbu Filosofi will remain the same over time.

This illustrates Yogyakarta’s consistency in preserving its cultural heritage.

“Because the building cannot change, whether you visit it now or in one hundred years, it will remain the same with the same story narrative. Because of this, it’s also legalized by UNESCO. Not only the building but also the story and its meaning in it. It is Yogyakarta’s character in its presentation,” he explained.

This UNESCO decision also allows Yogyakarta to remain a cultural custodian amidst the era of digitalization and modernization that is sweeping Indonesia.

Young people there can maintain and understand Yogyakarta’s culture better.

“It is important not only the buildings but more importantly the social culture. With a lot of digitalization and modernization, we hope that Yogyakarta people will still understand Yogyakarta,” he said.
