Dead Set, Coal Power Plant Retirement Before NZE 2060

Jakarta, Timerilis.com – The government’s plan to quit coal-fired power plants continues to be urged as an effort to realize the net zero emission (NZE) target by 2060. Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Arifin Tasrif opened up about the early retirement of coal-fired power plants.

“We have a program to cease faster, we have a power plant if allowed to continue running based on the contract the last power plant will be stopped in 2058, so two years before 2060,” Minister Arifin said at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Friday (4/8/2023).

One program that can help finance the early retirement program of coal-fired power plants is the Just Energy Transition Program (JETP) initiated by various developed countries in the world including the United States and Japan.

“So indeed we now have an energy mix, our power plant is 50% coal, this coal is now a source of emission contribution,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Arifin said JETP funding for early retirement of coal-fired power plants is still in the process of maturation. He said that his party had prepared as many as 4.8 Giga Watt (GW) of coal-fired power plants that were ready to be withdrawn and had been submitted for JETP funding.

“(JETP) is still developing. We have prepared 4.8 GW, take one first so that it can also be an item. At first, there was one with a capacity of how many, so this is to be discussed and determined,” he said. (Eva/Rd)
