Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Continues to Aim for Oil and Gas Exploration in the Unesco World Heritage Site

Jakarta, Timerilis.com – The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) is making efforts to increase oil and gas production. One of the blocks in focus is the Warim Block located in Papua. With oil and gas potential in this basin, is considered quite large and estimated to exceed the Masela Block in Maluku.

One of the challenges in exploring the Warim Block is that it intersects with the Lorentz National Park. In 1997, Lorentz National Park was officially established with an area of 2,505,600 hectares according to the Minister of Forestry Decree Number: 154/Kpts-II/1997. Then in 1999, the Lorentz area was designated as a World Heritage Site by Unesco through letter WHG/74/409.1/NI/CS with an official area of 2,350,000 Ha.

Head of the Special Task Force for Upstream Oil and Gas Business Activities (SKK Migas) Dwi Soetjipto said that the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has coordinated with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) to explore the Warim Block.

“Yesterday, there was a meeting between the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and KLHK to discuss a possibility for exploration there. Because there’s an intersection with Lorentz Park, of course, there must be communication with KLHK,” Dwi said, Monday (10/7/2023).

Expert Staff for Environment and Spatial Planning Muhammad Wafid said, as an effort to increase oil and gas lifting in Indonesia, it is unfortunate if it is not well-utilized Blocks that have abundant potential.

“Great potential exists in national parks or protected locations, as a country that requires increasing lifting production, it is a shame if it is not utilized. We are working on how it can be cultivated, but still according to the procedure,” said Wafid when met at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Tuesday (11/7/2023).

Based on data from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the Warim area itself has the potential of 25.968 billion barrels of oil and 47.37 trillion cubic feet of gas (TCF). The gas potential of Warim is known to exceed the gas production of the Masela Block, which is estimated to only reach 10.73 TCF.

It is known that Lorentz is the largest national park in Southeast Asia. The types of animals that have been identified in Lorentz National Park are 123 species of mammals and 630 species of birds, approximately 70 percent of the birds in Papua, one of which is familiar to us, namely the long-tailed Cendrawasih bird.
