Jakarta, Timerilis.com – A severe explosion rocked the PT Indonesia Tsingshan Stainless Steel (ITTS) smelter at the Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP) in Central Sulawesi on Sunday morning, December 24, 2023.

Initially, the blast injured 39 people and killed 12. However, by Wednesday, December 26, the death toll sadly rose to 18. This number includes 10 Indonesian and 8 Chinese workers.

The explosion happened around 05:30 WITA during furnace repair and plate installation. Early findings suggest a leftover liquid at the furnace’s base likely caused the explosion during these repairs.

Moreover, many oxygen tanks at the site, used for welding and cutting, also exploded because of the initial blast.

Dedy Kurniawan, the Media Relations Head at PT IMIP, spoke about the incident on Wednesday, December 27. He said they had quickly sent the deceased workers’ bodies to their families. For the Chinese victims, PT IMIP coordinated with the authorities to send the bodies to Makassar for their journey back to China.

Currently, experts are looking into the health and safety standards at the site. PT IMIP is waiting for authorities to find out what caused the accident at PT ITSS.

Kurniawan also stated that the company would make all the necessary changes to meet safety regulations and prevent such incidents in the future.
